Other Horse Genetic Testing
We expect the following tests to become available in 2026 as part of our expanding equine health testing panel. Testing will use a standard hair-root sample, consistent with our other DNA services.
These tests are intended to support informed breeding and health decisions and is especially relevant for horses with certain breed backgrounds.
Availability updates will be shared on our website.
Equine Temperament Gene Test (DRD4)
This test analyzes a well-studied dopamine receptor gene associated with curiosity, reactivity, novelty-seeking behavior, and overall temperament traits in horses. This test can help owners, trainers, and breeders better understand how a horse may respond to new environments, training approaches, and management styles.

Equine Gait Gene Test (DMRT3)
Discover whether your horse carries the genetic variant associated with alternative gaits and gaited movement. This test analyzes the DMRT3 gene, often referred to as the āgait keeperā gene. This gene plays a key role in coordination and limb movement and is strongly associated with a horseās ability to perform lateral or ambling gaits in addition to the standard walk, trot, and canter.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
This genetic test screens for known genetic risk factors associated with an increased predisposition to Squamous Cell Carcinoma. SCC is one of the most common types of skin cancer in horses, frequently affecting areas with limited pigmentation and minimal hair coverage. The presence of a risk variant does not mean a horse will develop SCC, but it may indicate a higher likelihood compared to horses without the variant.

Glycogen Branching Enzyme Deficiency (GBED)
Ā
GBED is a serious, inherited metabolic disorder that primarily affects horses with Quarter Horseārelated ancestry, including Quarter Horses, Paints, Appaloosas, and related stock horse breeds. GBED is caused by a mutation in the GBE1 gene, which disrupts normal glycogen metabolism. Affected horses are unable to properly store and utilize glycogen, an essential energy source for muscles and vital organs.
